The 10 worst toys of 2022 include a potential security threat

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Before you buy the toy that’s at the top of your child’s Christmas list, you might want to consider World Against Toys That Hurt, Inc nominees for the 10 worst toys of 2022.

WATCH is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of dangerous toys. According to a press release, WATCH has been monitoring children’s toy safety for 50 years, from choking hazards to chemical-related injuries, “in hopes of making a difference and reducing injuries to children.”

Consumer advocates Joanne E. Siff, WATCH president, and James A. Schwartz, director, highlighted potential safety threats recently discovered on toy store shelves and online, some of which include:

  • “Pill” type batteries that can be swallowed and cause chemical burns
  • A toy weapon capable of striking with a blunt object
  • Plush toys that can cause a child to suffocate

“It is shocking that classic toy hazards such as small parts, ropes, projectiles, toxic substances, hard materials and inaccurate warnings and labels continue to reappear in new generations of toys, putting children at risk,” it said. in a press release.

And 2014 is the year research published in SAGE Journals, found that one child goes to a US emergency room every three minutes due to a toy-related injury, and children of all ages face different toy-related hazards.

On Wednesday, WATCH released a list of toys that appear to contain one or more hazards, including:

Most of the products on the list have warning or cautionary signs on their labels or packaging that address hazardous issues, while others do not.

WATCH offers practical tips on identifying hazards so parents and caregivers can learn to avoid potentially harmful toys, such as:

  • Carefully check the toy and its packaging for any red safety flags before giving it to your child
  • Check out recent injuries and toy recalls
  • Promotion and awareness of dangerous toys sold in retail stores and online
